I paint landscapes that transcend the subject and illuminate its presence. Through paint application I create an atmosphere where light is the focus that sits between the viewer and the scene within the painting.
For my undergrad exhibition in 2015 I worked on a series of paintings that focused on the unfocused, seeing the world in simplified shapes of light and color. Inspired by photography, by the form and hues created through the unfocused lens, I painted with a palette knife, shifting color, value and size to create a blurred illusion where only the light and color remained, undistracted from the particulars of the subject. Since graduating I’ve spent many summers working as a fine-gardener and falling in love with flowers and horticulture. I’ve developed my style of colorful light-inspired landscapes in the direction of garden portraiture, in a series of floral landscape oil paintings that aims to spark interest in the beauty of nature and inspire conversation about the impacts of garden design on local biodiversity. |
