Using an adapted technique combined by many inspirations, I've found a strength in pencil drawing--which is of course where I started my art career as a 14 year old in a dingy classroom and a mind far from the lessons before me. I once would simply draw a pen piece, which would then be scanned and digitally colored, usually resulting in very graphic and flat doodles. I now use pencil for my base drawing, establishing a value structure, while also keeping future saturation in mind, for when I digitally color these pieces, the darkest pencil can become even the brightest yellow.
